“Is It the End of Working or a New Beginning?” written by Prof. Çisil Sohodol, Director of CIFAL Istanbul, was published in Dünya Newspaper on 6 December 2025.
Abstract
The rapid development of artificial intelligence and automation has raised growing questions about the future of work, employment and economic security. While technology leaders such as Elon Musk envision a future in which work may become optional due to increasing productivity and abundance, the transformation of labour markets also creates concerns about inequality, job displacement and access to opportunities. This article aims to examine the changing meaning and role of work in the context of technological transformation, with particular attention to the potential social and economic consequences of AI-driven automation. It discusses whether technological progress will lead to greater freedom and prosperity or deepen existing inequalities by examining developments across different sectors and their implications for Türkiye. By focusing on decent work, inclusive economic opportunities and the need for continuous skills development, the article highlights the importance of ensuring that technological transformation contributes to sustainable and inclusive societies. Ultimately, it argues that the central question is not whether work will disappear, but how societies can ensure that the benefits of technological progress remain accessible to people and support a more inclusive future.
