New Greenwashing: AI-Washing

On 25 July 2026, Prof. Çisil Sohodol, Director at CIFAL Istanbul, explored the growing phenomenon of AI-washing and the importance of transparency, accountability and trust in corporate artificial intelligence practices in an article published in Dünya Gazetesi.

Abstract

As artificial intelligence becomes a central part of corporate strategy and communication, the distinction between genuine transformation and technological image-building is becoming increasingly important. Similar to greenwashing in sustainability, AI-washing refers to the exaggeration or misrepresentation of an organization’s artificial intelligence capabilities, often by presenting conventional automation or limited AI applications as evidence of broader transformation. The article emphasizes that meaningful AI adoption requires more than adding new tools; it involves redesigning decision-making processes, data governance, workforce capabilities, ethical standards and organizational structures. As regulatory frameworks such as the European Union’s AI Act place greater emphasis on transparency, accountability and human oversight, trust is emerging as a critical source of competitive advantage. In this context, the future of corporate AI will depend not on how extensively companies promote their use of artificial intelligence, but on how responsibly, transparently and effectively they integrate it into their operations.
