On 19 September 2026 Prof. Çisil Sohodol, Director at CIFAL Istanbul, examined the financing challenges of the green transition and the need to make sustainability investments more accessible across the economy in an article published in Dünya Gazetesi.
Abstract
The green transition requires more than ambitious climate targets; it also requires the financial mechanisms that can turn these targets into concrete investments. Improving energy and resource efficiency, adopting circular production models, reducing waste and modernizing industrial processes all demand significant capital, technology and technical capacity. These challenges are particularly critical for SMEs, which often face greater barriers in accessing finance and implementing sustainability investments. The article highlights the growing importance of transition finance in bridging the gap between climate commitments and practical implementation, particularly as Türkiye prepares for COP31. By examining emerging financing models for circular economy investments, it emphasizes the role of financial institutions in enabling wider participation in the green transition. Ultimately, a meaningful transformation will depend on making sustainable investment accessible not only to large companies, but also to SMEs, industrial zones, municipalities and entrepreneurs across the economy.
